Description

Thirty-second Wexler-cataloged doubled die obverse for the 1962 Jefferson Nickel, WDDO-032 exhibits Class II (Distorted Hub Doubling) on IN GOD WE TRUST. Class II doubling occurs when the working hub deforms between impressions during die sinking, producing a spread that varies in direction and magnitude across design elements rather than maintaining uniform displacement. Two die markers confirm this specific die: a slanted die scratch inside the lower W of WE, and a die crack at the top of Jefferson's head. The die crack suggests advanced die state, as cracks develop through metal fatigue and propagate with continued use. Felix Schlag's Jefferson Nickel was in its twenty-fifth year of production in 1962, struck at Philadelphia in 75% copper and 25% nickel at 21.2mm.
