Description

Second repunched mintmark documented for the 1962-D Washington Quarter, this RPM-002 shows a more conventional D over D repunched to the south — the final D was punched southward from the initial impression's position, leaving the first D's traces visible above the definitive letter. Unlike the dramatic RPM-001 for this date (which features a horizontal first D), RPM-002 follows the standard pattern of a correctly oriented but mispositioned initial punch that was corrected with a southward-shifted second strike. The "D/D South" designation means remnants of the first impression appear to the north of the final D, where the upper curves and vertical stroke of the initial punch create extra contour above the definitive mintmark. Having two distinct RPMs for the same date demonstrates that multiple Denver-bound dies received imperfect mintmark punching — each die's unique correction pattern produces different overlap characteristics. The 1962-D was struck on 90% silver at 24.3mm, with Flanagan's Washington Quarter design approaching its final years in precious metal before the 1965 composition change.
