1962-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-004

Description

Documented by VarietyVista, the 1962-D RPM-004 Roosevelt Silver Dime exhibits a repunched D mintmark from the Denver Mint on one of the final silver-composition Roosevelt Dimes before the 1965 transition to copper-nickel clad. Die markers UVC-392 / DMR-006 track three progressive die states: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B at MDS with numerous die scratches running north-south on the reverse while the obverse is also at MDS; and Stage C at LDS (unconfirmed). The numerous north-south reverse die scratches at Stage B suggest die maintenance activity — possibly lapping or polishing — applied in a predominantly vertical direction across the reverse die face, creating a consistent pattern of parallel striations that serves as a die-state fingerprint for specimens struck during this maintenance window. The Roosevelt Dime was designed by John R. Sinnock and struck at the Denver Mint in 1962, composed of 90% silver and 10% copper, weighing 2.50 grams with a diameter of 17.91 mm. The 1962-D had a substantial mintage of approximately 334.9 million pieces, reflecting the enormous demand for silver dimes in the early 1960s that would soon lead Congress to authorize the Coinage Act of 1965, eliminating silver from dimes and quarters. Repunched mintmark varieties on silver Roosevelt Dimes from this period document the manual mintmark application process in its final years — the transition to including mintmarks on master dies beginning with certain denominations in the late 1960s would eventually eliminate RPMs entirely, making pre-1965 silver RPMs the last generation of this variety type in the Roosevelt Dime series.
