1961 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-003
Error
Description
Cataloged by the Wexler Team, the 1961 Proof Roosevelt Dime WDDO-003 exhibits a spread directed toward the rim on the date, IN GOD WE TRUST, and John R. Sinnock's designer initials JS — a divergent doubling pattern where the secondary hub impression pushes design elements outward from center, the opposite of center-directed varieties. Rim-ward spreads are often easier to detect than center-directed ones, as the outward shift tends to produce more visible separation on letters and digits near the coin's periphery. Two die markers span both sides of the coin: on the obverse, a very short north-south die scratch appears at the lower right of the L in LIBERTY, while on the reverse, a vertical die scratch extends from the right upper M of AMERICA to the rim. The dual-sided die marker system provides comprehensive confirmation, as finding both markers on a single coin establishes die identity with high confidence. No other cross-references are currently known beyond the Wexler designation. The 1961 Proof Roosevelt Dime was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 90% silver, and the combination of rim-directed spread with clear die markers makes this variety accessible to collectors who systematically examine proof dimes from the pre-1965 silver era for hub doubling characteristics.
