1961 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001

Description

As the first documented doubled die reverse for the 1961 proof Roosevelt Dime, Wexler Variety ID: 1961 10¢ Pr WDDR-001 holds a foundational position in the proof dime DDR census. A spread toward the center shows on ONE DIME, UNUM, the outer leaves on the right side, AMERICA, and the right dot — a broad distribution across multiple reverse elements. Die markers on the obverse include a series of die gouges on Roosevelt's cheek. The reverse carries a north-south die scratch near the top of the upper leaf on the left side with die chips above the left-hand scratch, and two short die scratches between the lower M and E of DIME. John R. Sinnock designed the Roosevelt Dime, introduced in 1946 to honor President Franklin D. Roosevelt. The 1961 proof was struck at Philadelphia on specially polished planchets, producing mirror-like fields. The WDDR-001 designation indicates this was the earliest doubled die reverse identified for 1961 proof dimes, establishing the reference point for subsequent DDR discoveries on this date and cementing its importance in the proof Roosevelt catalog.
