1961 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-019

Description

Discovered by Brian A. Ribar and cataloged as Wexler 1961 WDDO-019 Proof, this 1961 Proof Jefferson Nickel exhibits Class II Distorted Hub Doubling with close doubling visible on IN GOD WE TRUST. This variety has a notable catalog history: it was formerly listed as WDDO-025 and now replaces the original WDDO-019 listing, which was delisted because it was determined to be a doubled working hub rather than a true doubled die. This reclassification reflects the ongoing refinement of variety attribution as researchers distinguish between doubling that occurs at different stages of the die-making process. No obverse die markers have been noted, but the reverse carries several identifying features: a die scratch above the left arch and small left window near the roof line, a die dot below and between N and T of CENTS, and curving and slanted die scratches between the second and third columns of Monticello. As a proof issue, this nickel was struck on specially prepared polished planchets at the Philadelphia Mint. Jefferson Nickels have been struck in a 75% copper, 25% nickel alloy since 1938, with the exception of the 1942-1945 wartime silver composition. The Class II distorted hub doubling on the motto, combined with the detailed reverse die markers, provides a reliable diagnostic framework for attribution.
