1961 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-008

Description

This 1961 Proof Jefferson Nickel variety replaces the original WDDO-008 listing which was delisted because it was a doubled working hub. The current WDDO-008 displays Class II + VI (Distorted and Distended) Hub Doubling. Close Class II doubling shows on IN GOD WE TRUST, while extra thickness appears on the bottoms of the letters of LIBERTY. The combined Class II and Class VI designation indicates two distinct types of hub anomaly affected this die: distortion produced the lateral spread on IGWT, and distension caused the thickening at the base of the LIBERTY letters. On the obverse, a die scratch on the front lower portion of Jefferson's collar and a die gouge between the upper portions of S and the second T of TRUST serve as die markers. The reverse carries a die dot above the L of PLURIBUS. As a proof issue, this coin was struck on specially prepared polished planchets with mirror-like fields at the Philadelphia Mint. Jefferson Nickels are composed of 75% copper and 25% nickel. The replacement catalog history adds attribution context, distinguishing this variety from what was previously listed under the same WDDO-008 designation.
