1961 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-016
ErrorDescription
Attributed by Brian A. Ribar and cataloged as WDDO-016, this 1961 proof Jefferson nickel is a Class II (Distorted Hub) doubled die obverse showing close doubling on LIBERTY, the star, and the date. The coin weighs 5.0 grams, measures 21.2 mm in diameter, and is composed of 75% copper and 25% nickel, struck at the Philadelphia Mint as a proof issue. This listing has a notable catalog lineage: it was formerly designated WDDO-030 and now replaces the original WDDO-016, which was delisted because it proved to be from a doubled working hub rather than a true doubled die. The distinction between a doubled working hub (which affects all dies made from it) and a true doubled die (unique to one working die) is critical in variety numismatics, as true doubled dies are scarcer and more highly valued. Obverse die markers include a short vertical die gouge to the upper left portion of the W in WE. The reverse carries a die dot on the steps to the lower left of the left arch of the Monticello building. Cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID 1961 WDDO-016 Proof, this variety belongs to the Jefferson Nickels Original Design 1938-2003 series. The close Class II doubling on three distinct design areas (LIBERTY, star, date) provides multiple confirmation points for attribution. Proof coins from 1961 were produced exclusively at Philadelphia before the Mint transitioned proof production to San Francisco in 1968, and the multiple-strike proof process can sometimes enhance the visibility of doubled die effects by sharpening all design details, including the displaced secondary impressions.
