Description

Attributed by John A. Wexler, this 1961 Proof Jefferson Nickel WDDO-006 is classified as Class II Distorted Hub Doubling with nice spread on IN GOD WE TRUST that is clearly visible under moderate magnification. A die gouge extending from the upper right side of the Y in LIBERTY serves as the primary obverse attribution marker. On the reverse, a short vertical die gouge appears between the upper portions of the long and small left windows of Monticello, providing cross-die confirmation of the specific die pair. Cataloged under Wexler Variety ID 1961 WDDO-006 Proof, this variety carries the quality of spread that makes it a satisfying find for collectors — strong enough to be confidently identified without extreme magnification, yet subtle enough that it escapes casual inspection. Proof Jefferson Nickels from the early 1960s were produced during a period of robust collector demand for proof sets, and the 1961 issue precedes the coin shortage era that would disrupt proof production from 1965 through 1967.
