Description

A D/D tilted (rotated) repunched mintmark variety on the 1961-D Roosevelt Dime, WRPM-009 shows the original D mintmark position offset from the final punch at a rotated angle. Obverse die markers include a north-northeast to south-southwest die scratch in the field right of the top of the neck, and a northeast die scratch from the upper right of the G in GOD. On the reverse, a short die scratch runs south from the lower right of the E in UNITED, while a longer die scratch at the lower left side of the D in UNITED runs northeast through the D and into the field. A series of south-southwest die scratches extend from the lower right leaf of the olive branch. The tilted repunching creates a diagnostic rotation between the primary and secondary D impressions that distinguishes this variety from the more common straight D/D shifts. The abundance of die scratches across both sides provides multiple secondary markers that persist across circulation grades.
