Description

Silver Roosevelt Dimes from the early 1960s represent some of the final issues in the 90% silver composition that had defined American dime coinage since 1837, and the 1961-D WRPM-002 preserves a repunched mint mark from this transitional era. The Wexler Team attributed this variety under Wexler Variety ID 1961-D 10¢ WRPM-002, documenting a Denver Mint working die on which the D punch was applied more than once, leaving the characteristic secondary impression that defines an RPM. Silver coinage would end just three years later with the Coinage Act of 1965, making 1961-D dimes among the last Denver issues struck on 90% silver, 10% copper planchets containing approximately 0.07234 troy ounces of fine silver. The low sequence number — only the second cataloged RPM for this date — suggests either limited variety density or incomplete research, since the 1961-D dime had a substantial mintage. Hand-punching of the D mint mark into each working die remained standard at Denver, and the manual nature of the operation guaranteed a fraction of dies would exhibit detectable repunching. No additional cross-references beyond the Wexler catalog have been published.
