Description

Affecting a broad range of reverse design elements, WDDR-018 on the 1960 Lincoln Memorial Cent Proof Small Date exhibits a spread towards the center on the U of UNITED, ONE CENT, the bottom of the Memorial building, the designer's initials, and slightly on AMERICA. This variety's reach across multiple text groups and architectural features indicates a hub misalignment that influenced a wide swath of the reverse die, and the inclusion of the Memorial's lower structure among the affected elements is relatively uncommon in the 1960 DDR roster. No noteworthy obverse die markers have been recorded. The reverse carries three die gouges that serve as the primary attribution diagnostics: a short vertical die gouge on the upper right cornice, a small die gouge between the E and N of CENT, and a die gouge to the right of the center of the T in CENT. These three markers, concentrated in and around the denomination text, provide efficient confirmation points for collectors who have already identified the centerward spread on the denomination letters. Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1960 1¢ Pr WDDR-018 with no other known cross-references, the Proof Small Date designation constrains the population to approximately 3,000 specimens based on typical proof die longevity at the Philadelphia Mint.
