1960 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-011

Description

VarietyVista records this 1960 Roosevelt silver dime under UVC-344 with die marker reference DMR-013. The doubled die obverse shows a light separation on the designer's initials JS (for John R. Sinnock) running top to bottom, along with light extra thickness on IN GOD WE TRUST and LIBERTY. The designer's initials separation is the most efficient pickup diagnostic because the small scale of the initials amplifies the visual effect of even minor doubling, making the displacement appear more pronounced than the subtle thickening on the larger motto letters. Stage A shows both the obverse and reverse in early die state, with fresh die surfaces and no fatigue cracks. Stages B and C, representing mid-die and late die states respectively, are both unconfirmed and await documentation from submitted specimens. The 1960 Philadelphia Roosevelt dime had a mintage of 70.39 million pieces, produced during the final years of 90% silver dime production before the Coinage Act of 1965 transitioned to clad composition.
