1960 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-005
Error
Description
Cross-referenced as FS-102 in the Cherry Picker's Guide, DDO-005 for the 1960 Roosevelt silver dime ranks as one of the very strongest doubled die obverse varieties in the entire Roosevelt dime series. The spread affects LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, the designer's initials JS, the date, and even the hair detail on Roosevelt's portrait, producing visible separation across virtually every obverse element. VarietyVista tracked this die pair under UVC-338 with die markers reference DMR-007 and documented an unusually detailed four-stage die life. Stage A at early die state remains unconfirmed, but Stage B at EMDS shows a strong 19 within the date (a diagnostically useful feature for die state identification) with the reverse also at EMDS. Stage C advances to MDS with a medium 19 in the date, and Stage D reaches LDS where the 19 has weakened from die abrading while the reverse has also deteriorated to LDS. This four-stage documentation is exceptional within the DDO census, providing collectors with a complete roadmap of die deterioration from near-fresh to worn-out dies. The 1960 Roosevelt dime was struck in 90% silver at a Philadelphia mintage of 70,390,000, placing it among the final silver-composition dimes before the 1965 composition change. The FS-102 cross-reference ensures broad visibility in the standard cherry-picking references, and the multi-stage die state progression makes DDO-005 a particularly rewarding variety for collectors interested in building die state sets.
