1960 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-010

Description

Under the Wexler designation 1960 25c Pr WDDO-010, this proof Washington Quarter presents an extremely close spread toward the center on LIBERTY — doubling so subtle that the secondary impression sits nearly atop the primary, producing thickened lettering rather than visible separation. The extreme closeness demands careful magnification and comparison against a known normal specimen. Despite the subtle doubling, the die carries abundant markers: die scratches on the rim left of TRUST, above B and T in LIBERTY, a northwest-to-southeast die scratch on Washington's cheek, and east-to-west die scratches in the hair curls left of the ear. The reverse contributes short die gouges through the bottom of QUARTER DOLLAR and the tops of STATES OF, providing secondary confirmation from the opposite side. Struck in 90% silver at the Philadelphia Mint, this proof issue benefits from the controlled striking environment that preserves even extremely close doubling with the precision needed for attribution. The 1960 proof Washington Quarter represents the era before proof production moved from Philadelphia to San Francisco in 1968.
