Description

Struck as a proof in 90% silver, the 1960 Washington Quarter WDDO-002 shows strong extra thickness spread towards the center on LIBERTY, the date, the designer's initials, the lower queue, and IN GOD WE TRUST. The strong center-directed spread across multiple major design elements makes this one of the more visually impactful proof Washington Quarter doubled dies from this era. Obverse die markers include a small die gouge dot on the bottom back of the bust just left of the ribbon and four vertical die scratches to the left of the upper queue just below the hair. The reverse carries a short die gouge below the lower right of the A in QUARTER. The concentration of doubling on LIBERTY, the date, and the designer's initials creates a cluster of diagnostics in the lower portion of the obverse that collectors can survey efficiently in a single examination pass under magnification.
