1960 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-008

Description

Documented by the Wexler Team as 1960 25-cent Proof WDDO-008, this Washington Quarter shows a spread towards the center on IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, and slightly on the date. The inward direction indicates the secondary hub impression shifted toward the die center, compressing the doubled image rather than expanding it — a hallmark of certain Class II hub doublings. The graduated intensity is significant: IGWT and LIBERTY received full displacement while the date registered only slight involvement, mapping the boundary where the inward shift dropped below the detection threshold. On John Flanagan's obverse, IN GOD WE TRUST sits left of Washington's portrait and LIBERTY arcs above, while the date occupies the lower field. As a proof struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 90% silver at 6.25 grams, mirror-like fields enhance detection of the inward spread. No cross-references beyond the Wexler designation are known. Examine IN GOD WE TRUST and LIBERTY under 7x magnification, then check the date under higher power for the slight involvement.
