1960 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-020
ErrorDescription
Twentieth Wexler-cataloged doubled die obverse for the 1960 Proof Roosevelt Dime, WDDO-020 delivers strong doubling on designer's initials JS — John R. Sinnock's monogram at the truncation of Roosevelt's neck — with extra thickness on the date and IN GOD WE TRUST. A die gouge to the right of the back of Roosevelt's head provides an attribution point independent of the hub doubling. Strong doubling on the JS monogram is particularly notable: the initials are small and situated in a low-relief area, meaning the secondary hub impression had to be significantly offset for doubling to register as "strong" on such fine detail. The extra thickness on date and motto confirms the displacement was not localized but affected multiple obverse areas. As a proof struck on 90% silver planchets with polished dies, the mirror fields amplify visibility of all doubled elements. The 1960 date sits five years before the Coinage Act of 1965 ended silver circulating coinage. Struck at 17.9mm at Philadelphia. Examine JS for strong doubling, check date and IGWT for extra thickness, and locate the die gouge right of the back of the head.
