Description

Researched by the Wexler Team and cataloged as WDDO-018 with photos courtesy of Brian Ribar, this 1960 Proof Roosevelt Silver Dime exhibits a close spread toward the center that is best observed on the motto IN GOD WE TRUST, with lighter extra thickness also visible on designer John Sinnock's initials (JS) and the date. The "close spread towards the center" notation indicates hub doubling where the secondary impression was slightly displaced inward from the rim relative to the primary impression, a characteristic pattern that helps classify the doubling mechanism. As a proof issue, this dime was struck at the Philadelphia Mint on polished planchets using specially prepared dies — an environment where doubled die features stand out with particular clarity against the mirror-like fields. Die markers for attribution include die scratches running WSW/ENE to the left of Roosevelt's ear on the obverse, and a strong die gouge in the form of a dot to the left of the D in DIME on the reverse. These markers serve as unique identifiers for the specific die pair. The Wexler variety designation "1960 10c Pr WDDO-018" confirms this as a proof-only variety, the eighteenth cataloged doubled die obverse for the date. No cross-references to other attribution systems are currently known, making the Wexler listing the primary reference. Roosevelt Silver Dimes from 1946 through 1964 were struck in 90% silver composition, and proof specimens with doubled die features occupy a distinctive niche where proof collector and die variety specialist interests converge.
