1960 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-016
Error
Description
Attributed by the Wexler Team as 1960 10¢ Pr WDDO-016, this doubled die obverse variety for the 1960 proof Roosevelt dime exhibits spread directed northeast on the date, the designer's initials JS, and IN GOD WE TRUST. What makes this listing particularly notable is the companion reverse: the Wexler files record the reverse die as a minor doubled die independently cataloged as 1960 10¢ Pr WDDR-006, with a very close spread toward the center showing on USA and ONE DIME. This dual-variety die pairing -- where both obverse and reverse carry independent doubled die attributions -- creates a coin with two simultaneous hub alignment errors, a circumstance that enhances both the numismatic interest and the collector value of examples from this die pair. No significant obverse die markers were recorded, requiring attribution through direct comparison of the doubling pattern against the published diagnostics. The 1960 proof Roosevelt dime was struck at the Philadelphia Mint (San Francisco would not take over proof production until 1968) as part of the 1,691,602 proof sets produced that year. The 90% silver composition of 1960 proof dimes places them in the final chapter of silver proof coinage before the Coinage Act of 1965 transformed the denomination's metallic content. John R. Sinnock's Roosevelt obverse, with its detailed rendering of the president's profile and the surrounding text elements, continues to serve as one of the most prolifically studied surfaces for doubled die detection in the proof dime catalog, and WDDO-016 contributes to that ongoing census.
