Description

Struck as a proof at the Philadelphia Mint — which retained exclusive proof production until 1968 when operations transferred to San Francisco — this 1960 Roosevelt Dime displays spread toward the center that is strong on LIB and light on ERTY, the date, and the designer's initials JS (John R. Sinnock). A counterclockwise spread from a pivot point at approximately 1 o'clock affects IN GOD WE TRUST and the designer's initials, creating a rotational doubling pattern where elements further from the pivot point show greater displacement. Die markers include a southwest die scratch extending from Lincoln's chin on the obverse and a die gouge positioned between the M in DIME and the oak stem on the reverse, providing cross-side diagnostics for die pair identification. The proof format enhances the visibility of this doubling, as mirror-finish surfaces reflect light differently from the raised doubled elements, making even light spread on ERTY and the date more legible than equivalent displacement on a business strike.
