1960 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-014
Error
Description
Nice extra thickness on John R. Sinnock's designer initials JS, the date, and the motto IN GOD WE TRUST characterizes WDDO-014 for the 1960 Roosevelt dime — a proof variety, as indicated by the Wexler Variety ID designation 1960 10¢ Pr WDDO-014. Proof dimes in 1960 were struck at the Philadelphia Mint using specially prepared dies and polished planchets, with proof production totaling approximately 1.69 million sets. The mirror-finish surfaces of proof coins can both enhance and complicate variety detection: the reflective fields make raised doubling more visible under certain angles, but the precise strike quality can cause light doubling to appear as mere design sharpness rather than a discrete secondary impression. The obverse die markers are distinctive: die scratches running in a southwest-to-northeast direction on the base of the bust north of the date — a geometric orientation that provides a reliable fingerprint for identifying this specific working die. No significant reverse die markers were recorded. The cross-reference notes indicate that photographs of this variety were contributed by Brian Ribar, a recognized researcher in the dime variety community. The "nice extra thickness" classification sits between light and strong in descriptive intensity, indicating clearly detectable but not dramatic doubling on the affected elements. Sinnock's designer initials at the bust truncation, the date below, and IGWT along the upper periphery represent a diagonal band of affected obverse elements that spans from lower right to upper left — consistent with a directional hub misalignment that produced greater displacement in certain die regions than others. Collectors should examine the JS initials first at 12-18x magnification, as their fine letterforms most readily reveal thickening.
