1960 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-008
Error
Description
Quadrupling on the G of GOD — where four distinct impressions overlap to produce a visibly complex letterform — headlines WDDO-008 of the 1960 proof Roosevelt silver dime, alongside standard doubling on IN GOD WE TRUST, the designer's initials, and the date. The Wexler Team cataloged this under 1960 10 cents Pr WDDO-008 with no known cross-references. Two distinct obverse die stages have been documented: Stage A features a large die chip to the left of the eyelid, while Stage B shows a die gouge between the bridge of the nose and the eye. The reverse is similarly tracked across two pairings: the first reverse (Stage A) carries a northeast-to-southwest die scratch on the right leaves and a die scratch from the left leaves to the E in UNITED, while the second reverse (Stage B) has no noted markers. The quadrupling phenomenon — four detectable hub impressions rather than the typical two — indicates this die was hubbed at least four times with slight misalignment between each successive impression, a rare occurrence that produces layered image overlap visible as multiple ghost profiles on the G of GOD. The 1960 proof dime was the second-to-last year of 90% silver proof Roosevelt dime production before the composition change, struck at Philadelphia on polished planchets. The multi-stage documentation with two distinct obverse stages and two reverse die pairings indicates this obverse die was paired with at least two different reverse dies during its service life, and collectors can use the Stage A/B markers to determine which die pairing produced their specimen.
