1960 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-012

Description

Designated a "Best Of" Nickel Doubled Die variety, WDDO-012 on the 1960 Proof Jefferson Nickel exhibits Class II distorted hub doubling with a strong spread toward the center visible on the profile, LIBERTY, the star, the date, IN GOD WE TRUST, and slightly on the back of the head. Attributed by Mike Ellis and cross-referenced as CONECA 12-O-II-C, this proof-only variety (Wexler Variety ID: 1960 WDDO-012 Proof) ranks among the most significant Jefferson Nickel doubled dies. Obverse die markers include a die gouge (dot) in the depressed area behind the eye and a die scratch on the rim from above the G of GOD to the first T of TRUST. On the reverse, a die gouge (dot) sits well south of the E of E PLURIBUS UNUM, and three parallel die scratches run southwest to northeast on the upper left corner of the Monticello building. Class II distorted hub doubling results from a warped or tilted hub creating a spread that radiates toward or away from the center of the design, producing the strong convergent spread seen across multiple legend and design elements on this proof die. The "Best Of" designation reflects its standing among the most collected Jefferson Nickel doubled dies.
