1960 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-009
Error
Description
Classified as Class II (Distorted Hub Doubling), this 1960 proof Jefferson nickel shows a spread toward the center on LIBERTY, the star, and the date, with doubling increasing from left to right. IN GOD WE TRUST displays a tighter spread in the same direction. Cross-referenced as CONECA 1-O-II-C. An unusual obverse die marker distinguishes this die: a curling raised line in the hair above the back of Jefferson's neck that resembles struck-through wire but is raised metal, suggesting a prior strike-through left a lasting impression in the die. A short vertical die gouge sits inside the left center of the W in WE. No significant reverse markers have been noted. Because this is a proof striking, surfaces tend to be well preserved, making the doubling easier to confirm under low magnification. Collectors of proof Jefferson varieties value Class II spreads for their distinctive optical effect, and the unusual raised-line marker adds extra appeal for attribution specialists.
Die Markers
- Obverse: Interesting curling raised line in hair above back of neck. It looks like it was struck through string or wire but is raised. Perhaps the earlier strike through wire left an impression in the die. Short vertical die gouge inside left center of W of WE.
- Reverse: None noted.
