Description

Carrying a dual-variety die marriage, the 1960 Proof Jefferson Nickel WDDO-014 combines Class II distorted hub doubling on "IN GOD WE TRUST" and "LIBERTY" with a reverse die separately listed as 1960 Proof 5-cent WDDR-006. This means every specimen of WDDO-014 also carries a doubled die reverse, creating a both-sides doubled die proof that commands heightened collector interest. Cross-referenced as CONECA 2-O-II-C, the variety is positioned within the CONECA framework as the third sub-variety (C suffix) under the second Class II obverse listing for the date. A die dot on the first T of "TRUST" provides the key obverse die marker for attribution. On the reverse, the association with WDDR-006 means that Monticello-side diagnostics must also match the Wexler files for complete confirmation. The 1960 proof nickel was produced at the Philadelphia Mint (proof production did not transfer to San Francisco until 1968), and the proof mintage of 1,691,602 sets established the maximum possible population for this variety — though the actual number of DDO/DDR combo specimens depends on how many coins were struck before the affected die pair was retired. Proof Jefferson Nickels from 1960 feature Felix Schlag's original design in its twenty-second year, a period when both the hub and die manufacturing processes were well-established but still susceptible to the alignment variations that produce doubled dies. The close Class II spread described by the Wexler Team requires magnification to appreciate fully, but the reward of identifying a both-sides doubled die proof makes careful examination worthwhile for every 1960 proof nickel a collector encounters.
