1960 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001
Error
Description
Perhaps the most dramatic proof Jefferson Nickel doubled die, WDDO-001 resulted from a Large Date hub being impressed well centered over a Small Date hub, producing bold southwesterly spread on BERTY of LIBERTY and visible doubling on the letters of IN GOD WE TRUST. Obverse die markers include a short die gouge southwest from the rim left of the I in IN and die scratches running east-northeast from the hair above the ear into the forehead. On the reverse, a vertical die scratch appears in the upper tenth Memorial bay. This variety cross-references as FS-01-1960-101 (025), Breen #2229, CONECA 1-O-III, and Coppercoins 1960P-1DO-003P, reflecting its broad recognition across multiple cataloging systems. As a proof issue struck at the Philadelphia Mint, die life was limited — an estimated maximum of roughly 3,000 specimens based on average proof die longevity. Surviving examples are scarce in the marketplace and command strong premiums. Attributed by the Wexler Team.

Here we see the die scratches that run from the hair above the ear ENE into the forehead.
