1960 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-019
Error
Description
Sharing the same Wexler designation as the Large Date version, WDDO-019 on the 1960 Lincoln Memorial Cent Small Date regular strike documents this doubled die obverse variety as it appears under the later Small Date hub type introduced partway through 1960 production. The doubling created visible displacement on the obverse design elements during the die hubbing process. Die markers on the obverse include a die scratch running northeast from the bottom left of the L in LIBERTY, several die scratches running from west to east between the vest and the 1 in the date, and a die scratch running from north-northwest to south-southeast between the 9 and the 6. The reverse carries three short, nearly vertical die gouges at the top right of the C in AMERICA, two die scratches running from north-northeast to south-southwest between the D in UNITED and the first S in STATES, and a die scratch running from west-southwest to east-northeast through the lower TES in STATES. The Small Date designation is confirmed by examining the date numeral proportions, where all four digits present at a more uniform height compared to the Large Date hub's notably taller 1 and lower-sitting 0. Collectors pursuing a comprehensive 1960 DDO set should acquire both hub variants of WDDO-019.
