Description
Displaying a Class II spread towards the center on the date, LIBERTY, and IN GOD WE TRUST, WDDO-005 is a doubled die obverse on the 1960 Lincoln Memorial Cent Small Date business strike. Class II doubling is produced by a rotational misalignment between successive hub impressions during die manufacture, causing design elements at different distances from the pivot point to show varying degrees of spread. On this variety, the doubling affects three distinct areas of the obverse simultaneously, providing multiple diagnostic zones for confirmation. The date numerals, the letters of LIBERTY, and the motto IN GOD WE TRUST each carry evidence of the secondary hub impression shifted toward the center. Unlike the proof-only WDDO entries for 1960, this business strike variety was produced during normal circulation coinage operations at the Philadelphia Mint, meaning the potential surviving population is substantially larger. Collectors should examine each of the three affected areas under at least 7x magnification, looking for the characteristic inward shift that defines Class II hub doubling. The Small Date designation places this variety in the later production phase of 1960 Philadelphia cents.
