Description

Minimally scoped but genuinely cataloged, WDDR-016 on the 1960 Lincoln Memorial Cent Proof Small Date exhibits an extremely close spread towards the center on the designer's initials alone. The centerward displacement is confined entirely to the FG initials near the lower right of the Memorial building, making this the narrowest in scope among the 1960 proof DDR varieties — a boundary case where genuine hub doubling has been verified but challenges even practiced attributors to confirm visually. Detection requires high magnification, ideally 20x or above, and careful comparison of the initials against a known normal proof specimen to distinguish the secondary hub impression from the normal thickening that can result from die polishing on proof dies. No significant obverse die markers have been identified. On the reverse, die scratches run mostly north to south on the left Memorial base, providing the principal diagnostic for confirming this specific working die. The Small Date proof designation constrains the population to approximately 3,000 specimens based on typical proof die longevity at the Philadelphia Mint. Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1960 1¢ Pr WDDR-016 with no other known cross-references, collectors pursuing a comprehensive 1960 proof DDR set should verify the die scratches on the left Memorial base before attempting the demanding task of confirming the extremely close spread on the FG initials.
