1960 Proof Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-011
Error
Description
Struck as part of the 1960 proof production at the Philadelphia Mint, WDDO-011 on the Proof Large Date Lincoln Memorial cent presents a Class IV spread to the northwest on LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST. Class IV doubling — an offset spread in a single compass direction rather than a rotational displacement — creates a distinctive shadow effect along one side of the affected letters, and the northwestward direction means the secondary impression trails below and to the right of each primary design element. The obverse die is documented with four parallel die scratches running from southwest to northeast in the hair to the left of the ear, providing a prominent diagnostic cluster that anchors attribution. On the reverse, a die scratch runs from south-southwest to north-northeast at the top of the 5th Memorial bay, and a vertical die scratch occupies the lower two-thirds of the 10th bay. These reverse markers, though located on an otherwise undoubled surface, assist collectors in confirming the specific die pairing once the obverse Class IV spread has been identified. The Large Date proof hub places this die in the initial production phase before the mid-year transition, and the approximately 3,000-impression proof die life limits the total surviving population. Cross-referenced as CONECA 7-O-II+V and Coppercoins 1960P-1DO-007P, this variety is cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1960 1¢ Pr WDDO-011.
