Description

Sharing the same die origin as SKH-1c-1960-01(LD), this cud entry on the 1960 Lincoln Memorial Cent Proof Large Date records the advanced die failure stage where a fragment of the die broke away completely. The underlying spiked head characteristic — a die gouge or die crack extending from Lincoln's head to create the appearance of a projecting spike — remains present on coins from this die, but the additional cud formation marks a further stage of deterioration. A cud produces a raised, featureless blob of metal where the missing die fragment formerly resided, and the combination of a spiked head and a cud on the same die makes for an unusual pairing of error types. Cross-referenced under JC Cohen number JCc-1960_060 with a date of January 16, 2017, the Cohen Index lists this variety as "Not Listed." The Proof Large Date designation means this die operated at the Philadelphia Mint during the proof production run, with each specimen struck on a specially prepared planchet using polished dies. Proof die life of approximately 3,000 impressions constrains the surviving population, and collectors who locate both the retained spiked head and the subsequent cud stage hold complementary pieces from the same working die's history.
