1960 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-017
Error
Description
The most prominent doubled die reverse variety in the 1960 proof Lincoln Memorial cent series, WDDR-017 on the Proof Small Date holds the distinction of being listed in the Cherrypickers' Guide as FS-01-1960-801 — a recognition reserved for varieties deemed significant enough to warrant inclusion in the hobby's premier attribution reference. The Cherrypickers' listing elevates this variety above the other 1960 DDR entries in both visibility and market premium. A strong Class II spread towards the center shows on the right Memorial base, the right cornice, and the right side of the roof, with strong doubling also visible on the letters of ONE CENT. A lesser centerward spread affects the letters of USA, the left base, the left cornice, the left side of the roof, and the designer's initials. Tripling — evidence of a third hub impression — can be seen on some of the letters, especially the CA in AMERICA, adding another layer of complexity to the variety. Cross-referenced as CONECA 9-R-II, this variety is also cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1960 1¢ Pr WDDR-017. On the obverse, a short die gouge sits on the bottom front of the bust, while the reverse carries a die scratch running south-southwest to north-northeast near the center of the 1st Memorial bay. The proof format limits the population to approximately 3,000 specimens per die, and the combination of Cherrypickers' listing, strong visible doubling with tripling, and proof scarcity makes this one of the most actively sought 1960 cent varieties.
