1960 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-013
ErrorDescription
Among the most subtle doubled die obverse varieties documented on the 1960 proof Lincoln Memorial cent, WDDO-013 displays an extremely close spread towards the rim on the letters of LIBERTY on the Proof Large Date. The rimward spread is characteristic of hub doubling where the secondary impression was displaced very slightly outward from the coin's center, and on this variety the displacement is minimal enough that no significant die markers were identified on either the obverse or reverse to aid attribution. The Large Date designation places this die in the earlier proof production phase at Philadelphia, before the mid-year transition to the Small Date hub design that also affected the proof series. Detection requires high magnification — at least 16x is recommended — and careful comparison of the letter edges in LIBERTY against known normal specimens, looking for the faint secondary outline that defines the spread. Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1960 1¢ Pr WDDO-013 with no other known cross-references, this variety represents the extreme end of what constitutes a catalogable doubled die, where the doubling is genuine but challenges even experienced attributors to confirm visually.
