1960 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-019

Description

Originally cataloged as WDDO-029, this 1960 Proof Jefferson Nickel doubled die obverse was renumbered to replace the original WDDO-019 listing, which had been delisted as too minor to warrant catalog inclusion. The reassignment reflects the Wexler catalog's practice of maintaining sequence continuity by filling vacated numbers with newly documented varieties rather than leaving gaps. Exhibiting Class II Distorted Hub Doubling, the variety shows a nice spread on IN GOD WE TRUST — the motto positioned along the upper left obverse of Schlag's Jefferson portrait. As a proof strike from the Philadelphia Mint, this coin was produced with polished dies on specially prepared planchets, yielding mirror-like fields that enhance the visibility of even subtle doubled die features. Die markers aid in attribution: the obverse carries a die gouge resembling a dot to the left of the lower front portion of Jefferson's collar, while the reverse shows die scratches above and to the right of the small left window on Monticello.
