1960 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-016
ErrorDescription
A proof-only variety displaying Class II distorted hub doubling, the 1960 Jefferson Nickel WDDO-016 shows a nice spread on IN GOD WE TRUST on Felix Schlag's obverse portrait of Thomas Jefferson. Class II doubling results from physical distortion of the working hub between impressions, producing non-uniform displacement that can vary in intensity across the die face — on this variety, the spread is concentrated on the motto letters along the upper obverse rim. Two distinctive obverse die markers aid identification: a die dot positioned in Jefferson's hair to the right of his temple, and a second die dot on his nose. These raised dots — created by tiny pits or depressions in the die surface — are precise landmarks on the well-known Schlag portrait and remain consistent across all die stages. No reverse die markers have been noted. As a proof issue struck at the Philadelphia Mint with polished dies on polished planchets, the mirror-like fields of the 1960 proof make the doubled contours on IN GOD WE TRUST visible under angled illumination. Struck in 75% copper and 25% nickel at 5.0 grams. Cataloged by the Wexler Team. Examine IN GOD WE TRUST for the Class II spread, then confirm die identity with the die dot in Jefferson's hair right of the temple and the die dot on his nose.
