1960-D Doubled Die Obverse DDO-001

Description

Carrying attribution codes UVC-0970 and DMR-002, this 1960-D Washington Quarter obverse doubled die shows a light spread on BERTY of LIBERTY, on IN, and on TR of TRUST — a close spread requiring magnification to fully appreciate but well supported by stage markers. Stage A: early die state, unconfirmed. Stage B, the middle die state: a light die crack develops on the forehead; a die break appears on the wing under I of UNITED; and a strong die crack runs from the lower wing to the leaf above Q of QUARTER. Stage C: late die state, unconfirmed. The combination of the Stage B reverse markers — die break under I of UNITED and crack from lower wing to leaf above Q — represents advanced die deterioration for a nominal middle die state, suggesting this reverse die had pre-existing weakness at those locations or was under particular mechanical stress. The 1960-D Washington Quarter was struck in 90% silver at Denver. Doubled die obverses on Washington Quarters from the early 1960s are among the more carefully studied in the series.
