1960-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-002

Description

Documented by VarietyVista with die markers UVC-358 and DMR-003, this 1960-D Roosevelt Silver Dime RPM-002 exhibits a D/D repunched mintmark with the secondary impression displaced to the northeast — meaning the initial D mintmark punch was placed slightly southwest of its intended position, and when the engraver corrected by punching again in the proper location, traces of the first impression remained visible to the northeast of the final placement. Three documented die stages track this die's service life: Stage A is early die state (EDS, unconfirmed); Stage B shows both the reverse and obverse at mid-die-state (MDS); and Stage C documents both the reverse and obverse at late die state (LDS). This three-stage progression captures the working die's full service arc from fresh condition through moderate wear to advanced deterioration, with each stage potentially exhibiting different secondary markers that evolve as the die accumulates wear, cracks, and other progressive changes during production. The Roosevelt Dime was designed by John R. Sinnock and first struck in 1946, with the 1960-D produced at the Denver Mint in 90% silver composition (90% silver, 10% copper) weighing 2.50 grams with a diameter of 17.9 mm. The 1960-D had a mintage of approximately 72.1 million pieces. Repunched mintmark varieties on pre-1965 silver dimes document the manual mintmark application process used at branch mints, where a small steel punch bearing the appropriate letter was hammered by hand into each individual working die — a technique inherently susceptible to slight misalignment on the initial strike, producing the diagnostic D/D displacement patterns that variety collectors actively seek when examining rolls and collections of silver Roosevelt Dimes.
