1959-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-002
Error
Description
Cataloged by VarietyVista as UVC-609/DMR-004, RPM-002 is a repunched mintmark variety on the 1959-D Lincoln Memorial cent that demonstrates the progressive loss of diagnostic detail across three documented die stages. In Stage A, the secondary mintmark appears strong at early-to-mid die state, accompanied by a die gouge running northeast from the bridge of Lincoln's nose, with the reverse also at early-to-mid die state. As the die wears into Stage B, the secondary mintmark weakens to mid die state visibility, and a small die chip develops on Memorial column 1. By Stage C, the secondary mintmark has disappeared entirely at late die state, though the die gouge from the bridge of the nose remains light but visible, and a small die chip has appeared on column 12. This progressive weakening of the repunch is characteristic of hand-punched mintmark varieties, where the secondary impression is typically shallower than the primary and is gradually obliterated by die wear and polishing. Collectors seeking the strongest examples should prioritize Stage A specimens, where the secondary D is most clearly defined.
