1959-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-001

Description

Cataloged as UVC-422 and DMR-002, this repunched mintmark on a 1959-D Jefferson Nickel shows a D/D North — the D mintmark was punched into the die twice, with the earlier impression positioned north of the final placement. Three die stages have been documented: Stage A in early die state remains unconfirmed, Stage B shows the reverse in late-mid die state and the obverse in late die state, and Stage C in late die state is also unconfirmed. The "LMDS" designation on Stage B represents late-mid die state, a refined gradation between standard mid die state and late die state that some attributors use to capture intermediate deterioration. The 1959-D was the first Denver Mint Jefferson Nickel to bear the new reverse — Felix Schlag's original Monticello design continued unchanged, but 1959 marked the year the cent reverse changed to the Memorial design, placing the Jefferson Nickel in a broader context of design transitions.
