1959-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001
ErrorDescription
Carrying the lead designation WDDR-001 for the 1959-D Jefferson nickel, this variety was attributed by John A. Wexler and features Class II (Distorted Hub Doubling) with a pronounced spread on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA that increases from left to right. A closer spread also appears on E PLURIBUS UNUM. The progressive left-to-right intensification is characteristic of rotational hub distortion, where the working hub shifted slightly between impressions. On the obverse, a die scratch through the top of the N of IN serves as the primary diagnostic. The reverse carries die gouges through the left arch and a die scratch below the ES of STATES. As the first-listed doubled die reverse for Denver's 1959 nickel production, WDDR-001 anchors the date-mint combination and represents the strongest doubling available to collectors of the 1959-D Jefferson series.
