1958-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-001
Error
Description
Bearing the D mintmark punched over a previous D displaced to the northeast, this 1958 Denver Mint Washington Quarter is the primary repunched mintmark variety for the date, cataloged as RPM-001. The D/D northeast displacement is characteristic of the hand-punching process used at branch mints through 1989, where a steel punch bearing the mintmark letter was hammered into each working die individually. Slight misalignment between successive blows left both impressions visible, creating the doubled-mintmark effect that defines RPM varieties. The 1958-D Washington Quarter belongs to the Washington Silver Quarters series (1932-1964), struck in 90% silver composition — making it one of the final silver quarters produced before the Coinage Act of 1965 ended silver coinage for circulation. John Flanagan's Washington portrait, based on the Jean-Antoine Houdon bust, had been the standard quarter design since 1932. Higher-magnification color digital photographs of this variety are still needed for complete documentation, as the original specimen studied was not photographed at modern standards. RPM-001 designation means this was the first repunched mintmark documented for the 1958-D quarter, establishing the reference specimen against which subsequent RPM discoveries for the date are compared.
