1958-D Doubled Die Reverse DDR-001

Description

Carrying the DDR-001 designation for the 1958-D Washington Quarter, this is the primary doubled die reverse for the date and mint — the first cataloged and among the most sought after. The doubling presents as light spread with medium extra thickness across the full reverse legend: UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, QUARTER DOLLAR, and both olive-branch stems. Cataloged as UVC-0913 with a die marriage rating of DMR-003, the variety advances through three confirmed stages. Stage A and Stage B at early and mid die state remain unconfirmed. Stage C at late die state is well documented, with die cracks running from RIBUS to the wing under AMER, down the eagle's right wing, across the eagle's head, across the forehead and hair on the obverse, and across the bust. This heavy die cracking in the terminal stage makes late-state specimens particularly dramatic. The 1958-D was the final year before the Heraldic Eagle reverse was replaced, and this DDR-001 variety was identified by VarietyVista researchers.
