Description

Sixth documented repunched mintmark for the 1958-D Jefferson Nickel, RPM-006 is cataloged as UVC-1882 / DMR-008 and carries the unusual die state designation REDS at Stage A — a non-standard abbreviation that may reference a very early or transitional die condition. The 1958-D was struck at Denver in the standard Jefferson Nickel composition of 75% copper and 25% nickel, a formulation used continuously since 1938 except during the wartime silver alloy years of 1942-1945. Felix Schlag's original portrait of Jefferson appears on the obverse, paired with the Monticello reverse that would serve the denomination until the Westward Journey redesigns of 2004-2005. Repunched mintmarks on Jefferson Nickels from the 1950s reflect the hand-punching era, when each working die received its mintmark individually — a process that would eventually be replaced by including the mintmark on the master die beginning in 1990.
