1958-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-003

Description

Third in the Wexler-documented repunched mintmark census for the 1958-D Jefferson nickel, WRPM-003 displays a triple-punched D mintmark with displacements to the southwest and east — D/D/D Southwest & East — documenting at least three applications of the D mintmark punch in different positions on this working die. The variety carries cross-references from both CONECA (RPM #1) and the Wexler Team (Wexler Variety ID: 1958-D 5¢ WRPM-003), with the CONECA RPM #1 designation indicating it was the first repunched mintmark documented for this date by that attribution service. The 1958-D Jefferson nickel was struck during the final year of the original Felix Schlag reverse design without the designer's initials — Schlag's FS initials were added to the obverse beginning in 1966. Denver produced approximately 168.25 million nickels in 1958, a substantial output generating heavy die usage and the multiple hand-punched mintmark applications that produced this triple-punch artifact. The die markers notation indicates that no visible markers were identified on either obverse or reverse beyond the mintmark itself, with the caveat that only a circulated specimen was available for examination — suggesting that die markers may exist but are obscured by wear on the available example, and a mint state specimen could reveal additional diagnostics. The southwest and east displacement directions indicate the three D punches created a spread pattern spanning roughly 180 degrees, with secondary impressions falling both below-left and to the right of the primary position. Collectors should examine the D mintmark on the reverse under 15-20x magnification, looking for three overlapping D outlines whose serifs and curves resolve into distinct impressions displaced to the southwest and east relative to the primary punch position.
