Description

Cataloged as UVC-0894 and DMR-008 in the VarietyVista system, the 1957 Washington Quarter DDO-005 shows light spread on IN GOD WE TRUST, the ERTY of LIBERTY, the date, and the designer's initials, with medium spread on the queue and ribbon. Three die stages have been documented. Stage A is an unconfirmed early die state. Stage B is an unconfirmed mid-die-state. Stage C, at late die state, develops a die crack on the bust above the 57 of the date, with the reverse also at LDS. The medium spread on Washington's queue and ribbon provides the most visually accessible diagnostic, as these design elements are rendered in sufficient relief that even moderate doubling becomes detectable under magnification. The Stage C bust crack above 57 serves as a convenient combined diagnostic—it simultaneously confirms the variety attribution and establishes the late die state. Collectors should examine the hair queue area first, where the medium spread is most pronounced against the detailed portrait engraving.
