Struck in 90% silver composition during the final decade before the Coinage Act of 1965 ended silver in circulating coinage, this 1957 Philadelphia Washington Quarter carries a doubled die reverse cataloged by the Wexler Team as WDDR-001. The doubling presents as an extremely close spread towards the center on both branch ends, QUARTER DOLLAR, and the lower leaves of the heraldic eagle's olive branch and arrows design. Obverse die markers include a die scratch running north from the top left of the N in IN. On the reverse, a die scratch runs north-northeast from the back of the eagle's head to the bottom of the B in PLURIBUS, and parallel die scratches run south-southeast from the bottom of the S in PLURIBUS. As the first DDR variety documented for this date, WDDR-001 holds foundational status in the Wexler catalog.
