1957-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-003

Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista with codes UVC-458 and DMR-004, this 1957-D Jefferson Nickel shows a D/D repunched mintmark displaced to the northeast. Struck in 75% copper and 25% nickel, the 1957-D comes from a period when Felix Schlag's Monticello reverse design was well established after nearly two decades of production. Die progression is documented with Stage A in early die state (designated as "REDS" in the catalog, indicating a refined early die state classification). RPM-003 is the third most prominent repunched mintmark for the 1957-D date, indicating a moderate displacement that is identifiable under magnification. Repunched mintmarks on Jefferson Nickels from this era arose from the hand-punching procedure at the Denver Mint, where workers individually impressed the D punch into each working die.
