1956 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-002

Description

Cross-referenced as CONECA 2-O-VI and attributed under Wexler Variety ID 1956 50-cent WDDO-002, this Philadelphia Mint Franklin Half Dollar displays extra thickness on LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and the date. Three obverse die states are tracked: Stage A carries a short diagonal scratch from lower hair to the back of the neck and a die dot at left center of the first T in TRUST. Stage B develops die chips (filled) between the lower and center bars and from the upper bar to the rim of the E in LIBERTY. Stage C shows die chips between all bars. The reverse also shows three stages: Stage A has no noted markers, Stage B introduces a scratch curving NE from the bottom right corner of the Liberty Bell, and Stage C matches B. The Franklin Half Dollar series (1948-1963) is actively collected by variety specialists. The CONECA 2-O-VI cross-reference places this as the sixth Class II obverse doubled die for 1956, confirming independent verification.
