Description

Showing light extra thickness on LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and the date, this first Wexler-cataloged doubled die obverse for the 1956-D Washington Silver Quarter documents a hubbing anomaly on a mid-decade Denver Mint issue struck in 90% silver composition. The "extra thickness" characterization describes doubling that manifests as a slightly broadened or thickened appearance to the lettering rather than a clearly separated secondary image — a presentation typical of very close hub doubling where the displacement between impressions was minimal. Die markers include a short die scratch extending WSW from the lower left side of the I in LIBERTY on the obverse, a short die crack on the base of the bust, and a short die scratch running ESE from the lower right of the F of OF on the reverse.
